A New Hanover County city Wilmington has a population of 123,744. This port city gets its name after the first Earl of Wilmington, Spencer Compton. It had an active role in the American Revolutionary War and The Civil War. A railroad built from here to Weldon was the world’s longest rail track then. Establishment of the Wilmington gas light company gave freedom from the street oil lamps to the city dwellers.
