An independent city in Virginia Roanoke has a population of 97,032. Located in the Roanoke Valley this is the largest municipality in the Southwestern Region of the state. Later it became a transportation hub due to its location in the middle of the valley. This aided its rapid growth. This earned it the nickname Magic City too. It was a coal-mining center. It produced the world-famous Bituminous Coal. Coal was exported to many areas across the globe. Then it ventured into designing, manufacturing, and maintaining of the steam locomotives. These were well-known for the excellent steam power world over. Later the manufacturer converted to diesel power from steam as the latter had become obsolete.
