A Durham county city Durham has a population of 278,993. First established as a depot for the railroad needs of wood and water. The land for this was donated by Dr. Bartlett S Durham. The city is named after him. Tobacco was a thriving industry here and contributed greatly to its economic progress and the city’s development. It was the founding place of the American tobacco company. Other industries that thrived here are textiles and electric power. After revitalization now it is a medical, educational, and research center. The city was called the Flower of the Carolinas by John Lawson a poet while describing the beauty of the city.
